FILLING YOUR WEBSITE WITH THE RIGHT CONTENT
By Glen Graham | October 9, 2007
This is part two of a three part series on Building a trusted web presence
Part 2 : “Filling Your Website With The Right Content”
A major factor in building a trusted web presence is providing your site with the right content for your visitors. New site owners occasionally get so wrapped up in the visual appearance of thier sites visitors get short changed.
In the image above you notice a man sitting in the middle of a floor of a huge unfurnished house. The house represents your website, everything else in the house besides the man represents the content of your website.
A beautiful house with out any chairs bed or stove is incomplete and so is a website with out the right content to fill it with.
create your content first
Some basic advice I give my clients when building a website is to create your content first, this way the content can stand on its own with out visual distractions such as elaborate animations, videos, pictures etc.
Starting with the about your company section is a great starting point, you would be amazed at the number of people that get stuck at this point because they can’t put into words what their company is about.
leaving out what your company is about or at the very least a brief description of your company, creates an atmosphere of distrust for a new visitor. Take this site for example they are attempting to sell motor cycles but there’s a lack of content explaining to visitors who thier buying the bikes from.
ask your self the right questions
Filling your site with the right content means asking your self the right questions.
Below are a list of questions that will help you discover what the right content is for your site.
- what information about my company company could be a deciding factor in a new client using my services.
- if selling merchandise is their content discussing the return policy
- is there detailed info about who to contact in case of a problem with service
- any information about how long your company has been in business
- should your site have a FAQ section so potential clients can find answers to their common questions
- is it appropriate to have a list of your top clients
- should their be a list of services that I offer on my site
- is there content expressing what needs your site will address
